Mr. Antonio Leon Gattis

Today, we remember Toni Gattis.

Antonio Leon Gattis, age 58, died on Decomber 12, 2022, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, NC.

Toni was born on December 6, 1964, in Chapel Hill, NC, to parents Elizabeth Jean and Carl Lackey. He graduated from Chapel Hill High School in 1983 and shortly thereafter, he began working for UNC Hospitals. Eventually, he began work at Mediterranean Deli in Chapel Hill. He was in service there for 25 years. While there, he met his "bonus" family, Jamil and Angela Kadoura. They and their children Ambara, Jenine, and Zidane held a very special place in his heart. Jamil and Angela were like a second set of parents to Antonio and loved him very much. They treated him as if he was a son. Liz Caughlin, a special friend, was also very close to Toni and will remember him fondly.

Toni is survived by his sisters, Anita King, Beverly Gattis, and Bridgette Gattis, all of Durham; his uncle, Joe Gattis, of Durham, NC; his brother, Louis Webb (Catherine), of Mebane, NC; his bonus family, Jamil, Angela, Ambara, Jenone, and Zidane Koudara of Chatham, NC; and Liz Caughlin, a special friend. He will also be remembered by a host of other family and close friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Elizabeth Jean Lackey of Chapel Hill; his grandmother; Martha Gattis of Chatham, NC; and his aunt Ola Dorsey of Durham, NC.

Toni was a social, active man who enjoyed playing soccer and going to the movies. He was a firm believer in God, and he enjoyed friends and family. He had a smile at the ready and was always willing to lend a helping hand.
