DeVaughn Best, Jr., affectionately known as “June Bug”, was born March 30, 1985, to Angeline Kay Williams and DeVaughn Best, Sr., at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Goldsboro, NC, and transitioned from this life on February 18, 2023, at home.
As a young child, "June Bug" attended Holland Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church Apex, NC. He received his formal education through Chatham County Public Schools, graduating with the class of 2004 from Northwood High School. In 2009 he joined the United States Army and served as an Army Medic while stationed at Fort Jackson Army Base, Columbia, South Carolina; Fort Sam. Houston Joint Army Base, San Antonio Texas; Fort Carson Army Base, Colorado Springs, Colorado; and served a tour of duty in Iraq prior to his discharge in 2018.
Following his discharge, he returned to North Carolina as a member of the United States Army Reserve - Medical Unit, in Asheville, NC, and was employed as a Customer Service Manager and Assistant Store Manager at Wal-Mart, and a Communications Specialist with Spectrum.
DeVaughn was passionate about playing video games and reading comic books. Full of LOVE for his sons and all his other family and friends – spending time with them was his biggest joy. He was always there for everyone and did everything to help anyone he could.
He is preceded in death by his father; his maternal grandparents, James and Rebecca W. Lewis; and his paternal grandparents, Dock Herman and Luberta Smith Best.
Cherished and special memories are left to his sons, Jakari and James; his mother, Angeline Kay Williams; brothers, Kevone Best, Henri McCullen, Jason McCullen, and Shawn Williams; his sister, Andiwanda Campbell; his nieces, Korinne Ramsey and Layla O’Daniel; aunts, Sharron James-Bizzell and Linda Mathis (Wayne); uncles, Alton Lewis (Erica), James Lewis (Brenda), Lynn Best, and Kim E. Lofton, and Michael Poe; God brothers, Kevin Sawadogo and Eugene Howard; best friends, Alex Williams and Maurice Hunter; and a host of beloved cousins, other relatives and friends.
