Mr. Howard Baldwin Obituary

On a brisk Thursday afternoon on March 19, 1931, a beautiful baby was born in Chatham County, NC. He was born to Henry Watson Steed and Odie "Pauline" Baldwin Steed. Odie named him Howard, but he later became affectionally known as "Buddy". Buddy entered into eternal rest on Thursday, July 13, 2023 at Hock Pavillion in Durham, NC.

Buddy attended Chatham County Schools and at the age of 12, moved to Brooklyn, New York where he attended New York Public Schools.

Buddy was preceded in death by his parents, his only sibling, Vivian Baldwin Fleming, his neice Darlyne Fleming and nephew Darryl Fleming. Left to cherish his memories are his son. Kevin Baldwin (Chasity) of Mableton, GA; his daughter, Karen Baldwin of Durham, NC; his step-daughter, Sonya Owens (Darryl) of Chapel Hill, NC; and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a loving aunt, Nettie Burnette of Pittsboro, NC. Although many loved Buddy, special recognition is being made of his cousins Roxyette and Dennis Farrington, who cared deeply for Buddy and provided special love and support for him.

Buddy loved his church, St. Joseph CME Church in Chapel Hill, NC where he was a faithful member until illness set in. As a member of St. Joseph, he spearheaded Frangelism in the Park - an outdoor evangelistic musical and recreational event.

Buddy was involved in many activities throughout his lifetime: He began his musical career as a guitarist in the gospel quartet "The Heavenly Upsetters" in Brooklyn, NY. He was a member of the St. Joseph Male Chorus. Buddy went on to participate in gospel activities around North Carolina, as Master of Ceremonies for gospel events. He was an avid bowler, participating in AMF bowling leagues, and was the "Bid Whist" King-- if you asked him.

His love of motorcycles and fancy cars was well noted, and he was a sharp dresser. Buddy was a member of the local chapter of Honda Goldwing, Bull City Riders, Hi Riders and Carolina Wings motorcycle clubs. Buddy never met a stranger and embraced everyone he came into contact with love and respect.

Buddy held several positions during his life; however, two positions he was most proud of: New York's Finest (NYPD) and Brooklyn's Favorite (17th Precinct), as well as the positions he held working for the Town of Chapel Hill, Public Works Department. He also drove charter buses for Horton Tours (Chapel Hill, NC) and Lipscomb Promotions (Durham, NC).
