Mr. John Henderson Jones Jr.

John Henderson Jones, Jr. was born on January 31, 1946, to the late Rev. John Henderson Jones, Sr.and Alice Freeland Jones Merritt. John departed this life on Thursday, March 3, 2022, at Duke University Hospital.

Four siblings preceded John in death, Johnnie Mae Jones-Goins, Benjamin Henderson Jones, Marion Jones Brooks, and Lula Anette Jones Lloyd.

John was a 1964 graduate of Lincoln High School where he enjoyed sports on the football, basketball, and track teams. John excelled in these sports and received numerous awards and recognition for his outstanding performance in all sports. John was inducted into the Lincoln High School Hall of Fame in 2013.

John was married to Euyvonne Cotton Williams in 1964 and to this union, he had 2 children, Cyetesse Cotton and John Henderson Jones III.

In 1968, John married Vernelle Brooks Jones and to this union, he had two children, Tinita Michelle Jones, and Alicia Jones White.

John joined First Baptist Church in 1970 where he served on the trustee board and was a member of the FBC gospel Choir.

John was employed by Chapel Hill Police Department in 1971 as a police officer. During his tenure, he was promoted to several positions, sergeant, detective, and Lieutenant. He retired from the force in 1990.

In 2017, John was mikvehed and became a part of the Beth HaShem Congregation in Durham, NC.

John had an outstanding character, a smile that would light up the room, and was loved by many people in his Chapel Hill and Carrboro communities. He will forever live in the hearts of his family and friends.

He leaves to cherish fond memories of him -- His soulmate, Vernelle Brooks Jones of Durham, NC; Four children: Cyetesse Cotten of Chapel Hill, NC, John Henderson Jones III (Tonya), and Tinita Michelle Jones of Durham, NC, and Alicia Jones White (Kenneth II) of Charlotte, NC; Eight Grandchildren: Derrick Hayes, Chatora Jones, Jonisha Jones, Jonathan Jones (Ally), Kylise White, Janai White, Kenneth White III, and Stanley Rhodes; Eight great-grandchildren; Three sisters, Alicia Delight Jones, Brenta Jones Baldwin (Charlie, Sr.), and Juanita Faye Alston; Nine nephews and seven nieces and a host of cousins and friends.
