Joseph Alexander Fearrington, eldest son of the late Rufus Calvin Fearrington and Ola Baldwin Fearrington, transitioned on October 28, 2022. He was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings, Sadie Mae, Virginia Alberta, Roosevelt, Rufus Eugene, and Margaret. His younger sister and only living sibling at the time of his death, Ola Mae Harris, passed away, Friday, Nov. 4, 2022, a week after his transition.
He completed his education at Damascus School. His favorite subject was math because he enjoyed "working figures".
Joseph was united in marriage to the love of his life, Lucy Watson on May 20, 1946 and was committed to her until her death on May 1, 2017. To this union, two children were born: Clementine Shelbra and Joseph Durrell (who preceded his dad in death in 2011).
After serving in World War Il, Joseph was employed by the Carolina Inn as a bell hop and later was promoted to Head of Maintenance. He remained there until his retirement. He was also a highly skilled carpenter and painter. As a carpenter, he helped construct many homes and commercial buildings in the Durham and Chapel Hill areas. With help from his dad and brother, he built his own home where he resided from 1946 until his death (76 years).
During his youthful years, he was an avid hunter and fisherman. And as he progressed in life, he loved spending his free time bushhogging the land to turn the soil and growing gardens filled with a variety of produce. Silver Queen corn was his prized cash crop!
He leaves to cherish his memory his daughter Clementine Fearrington Self, grandson James L. Self, Jr. (Jameria), his grandson Samori D. Self who preceded him in death (Sonya), great granddaughters Samya A. Self, Jaynah C. Self, and Sydney L. Self, many cousins, nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
