Mrs. Allonious Rogers Nickens, daughter of the late Freeman and Ollie Kimble Rogers, was born June 11, 1925 in Orange County. She was one of 10 children, eight preceded her in death. She departed this life for her heavenly home on November 19, 2022, at the Hock Family Pavilion after a brief illness.
She was united in Holy Matrimony to Mr. Philmore Nickens of Lakewood NJ. To this union, five children were born. Of the five children, three preceded her in death, Gregory Nickens, David Nickens and Geary Nickens. She was also preceded in death by one grandchild, Kevin Nickens.
She joined Hickory Grove Baptist Church at an early age and attended as long as her health permitted.
She received her education from the Orange County Training School in Chapel Hill, N.C. She began her career in 1970 at the UNC Medical Science Teaching Laboratories, where she also retired from. Upon retirement, on June 30, 1989, Allonious received the Distinguished Service Award from UNC.
During her youth, Allonious loved music, dancing, and fishing. She had a passion for cooking, canning, and sharing recipes with her sisters. She liked flowers. She often found joy planting flowers in her flowerpots, with her son, Keith. Allonious loved family gatherings and fixing plates for the people in the community. In the summers, she would host most of the family reunions in her yard. As she got older, she enjoyed quilting and doing crossword puzzles. She was known for her sassiness to her close family and friends and also was known for her protectiveness of her sisters.
She leaves to cherish her memories her son, Reggie Nickens of Durham and her devoted son and caregiver of the home, Keith Nickens, of Chapel Hill. She leaves behind three grandchildren, one granddaughter, Susan Nickens of Chapel Hill and two grandsons, Charles Nickens (Fatima) and James Nickens, both from Durham, N.C. She also leaves five great grandchildren; one sister, Gertrude Nunn of Chapel Hill; three special nieces Judy Nunn-Snipes of Chapel Hill, Sheila Johnson-Owens and Gwendolyn Anderson both of Baltimore M.D.; and a host of nieces, nephews, and relatives.
