Ms. Sonia Louise “Sam” Johnson , the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Mack Wilson (Ella Marie) Johnson was born Tuesday, April 20, 1965 in Orange County, North Carolina. She left this life to return to the open arms of her Creator on Thursday, July 29, 2021.
“Sam” as she was affectionately called was educated in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro school system and graduated as a member of the Chapel Hill High School Class of 1981. She gained employment and retired from the same school system.
Known for her deep-seated dimples, beautiful smile and wide grin, “Sam” was indeed a wonder to behold. Undoubtedly, one of the sweetest people you could ever meet, she was favored among her family and friends. Sam enjoyed people; was as loving as a teddy bear and as quick-witted as they come. Also, known for her Johnson stance, Sam was the “no holds barred, ride or die” chick you wanted by your side when in a pinch. Her strength was as immeasurable as the passionate manner in which she cared for others. Also nicknamed, “big horse,” as a child, Sam was called upon to single handedly pickup her grandmother from the floor following a fall.
Her love for travel, especially destinations involving the excitement, elegance and non-stop entertainment aboard cruise lines, kept her ready for the next adventure. She lived to be around people, especially family who were the recipients of Sam’s “inside jokes and comments. Two of which come to mind, (in our Sam voice) “I ain’t never gone have no money,” and telling her sister Mamie, “Give me all your clothes you don’t want, ‘cause, I’m gone be a size 12 soon!” Now, that was simply Sam, exercising her faith and believing that nothing was impossible, when she wanted to receive the blessing of a new wardrobe. Her presence is truly missed.
In addition to her parents and grandparents, she was preceded in death by two brothers: Dallas Burnette (Denise) and William McArthur Thompson also known as “Onion.”
Sonia leaves to cherish her precious memories a loving, dedicated and caregiver son, Jonathan Duane Johnson of the home; siblings, James Russell Thompson (Julie) of Fayetteville, North Carolina and Mamie J. Parker (Harvey) of Sanford, North Carolina; four aunts, Erna Mae Coble, Henrietta T. Massey, Elizabeth Johnson and Mary Johnson; two uncles, Ernest Johnson and Johnny Johnson; a devoted “care mother”, Lillian Lee of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; several nieces, nephews, cousins, co-workers and friends.
