Applicants Character: Stella, affectionately known as "Stella Mae" was a generous and lovely person who was the life of the party and cherished by many of her friends. As a young rebel, actively enjoying her teenage years, the idea of equal rights for all compelled her to get involved in the local Civil Rights Movement. Rising to the occasion, along with many other like-minded classmates and friends, she participated in sit-ins, marches, and protests for the desegregation of schools in the south and equality. She rose to the occasion and became involved in advocating and protesting for local change.
Stella worked at A & P, Whole Foods, and Southern Season before becoming a Teacher Assistant with the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools. She diligently worked to ensure that students with special needs were treated with care, dignity, and respect. Stella loved planting and tending to flowers. Just as she planted, cared for, and nurtured her beautiful plants, she did the same for her family. Stella enjoyed the times she spent with her family, adored and cherished her grandchildren.
